You would not do that in your production model, but you could do it in a copy set up for quick presentation to give a general idea of the model. You could do it all white with some shading, like a cut out polystyrene physical model.

A nice quick and dirty process. Good for setting up to focus on a specific element of the building.

I actually disd a similar thing with walls that Structural were going to make SHEAR walls by colouring those RED so they stood out and showed their impact on the existing building. A useful tool to take to coordination meetings when you wish to highlight an issue as it clearly showed interface between the elements you want to highlight.

The 3D PDF is great for capturing stuff like these at a cirtain juncture in the project. It allows for 3d exploration of the model and is an INSTANT IN TIME in the project. You cann then turn this colouring off and move on with the project.

Filters & Color Splasher

Another way to do this is to give all Categories a numeric parameter say CLASH ITEM. You give each specific item a number 1, 2, …25 etc and you splash the colours , or setup a filter , so that you colour the 2 items that are causing Clash problems different colours so that they are easy to highlight. I must admit I find color splasher far quicker and easier to use than Filters as the pop-up box is in the same screen as the model and small enough not to get in the way.

You could use something like COIN auto Section Box to create a 3D view of the specific area, then send it to a 3D PDF.

3D PDF’s are good to make a record (or a simple screenshot) so that these items can be passed around to other consultants to highlight the issue.

End comment

A couple of techniques I will try out in the future.

The Phases one is quick, and easy. But I think you’d need to make a copy of your model so you can adjust a few things between phases for effect and you wouldn’t want to be messing with elements and phases in your main model.

The Shadows is a good one to send to clients to talk about sun penetration into buildings.
